Click each account, and then click Remove Account until all the accounts are removed. Add your account back. Enter your Microsoft account or your work. In my “These are a Few of my Favourite Things– The OneNote Edition” presentation for the April meeting of the Victoria Office 365 Users Group, I shared some slides explaining how Microsoft OneNote treats OneNote files The key point I wanted to make here is this: When you create a new Notebook, OneNote creates a folder that matches the name of your notebook.
Microsoft OneNote is one of the best apps for taking notes, compile research data, organize information you need on a regular basis, and best of all, it works virtually everywhere. You can use it on your Windows 10 devices, as well as on Android, iOS, macOS, and on the web. However, due to its cross-platform design, sometimes syncing your data to the cloud using the desktop version of OneNote on can be a problem.
Luckily, if your notebooks or a particular section won't sync, you experience syncing conflicts or storage related issues, there are a few things you can do with OneNote 2016 to get everything working again. In this, we'll walk you through the steps to resolve common sync problems using OneNote 2016.
How to fix notebook not syncing on OneNote If a particular notebook is not able to sync, you can try a few things to troubleshoot and resolve this problem. Checking notebook on the web You can quickly find out if there is a service problem by trying to open the notebook using a web browser. On OneNote, click File, and select Info. On the right side, right-click the link, and click Copy (or right-click the notebook and select Copy Link to Notebook). Open your web browser.
Right-click and paste the link in the address bar and press Enter to open the notebook. Once you've completed the steps, if the notebook opens in the browser, then it may be a problem with the desktop client.
Reopening a notebook If it's a problem with the application, opening the notebook again is likely to fix the sync problem. On OneNote, click File, and select Info.
Click on Settings, and select Close (or right-click the notebook and select Close This Notebook). Click File, and select Open. Click the notebook you want to open. After completing the steps, the connection will reset, and your notebook should start syncing again.
Checking sync status If you can open the notebook online, but you don't see the changes, you'll need to check the sync status to find out the particular error to troubleshoot and fix the problem. On OneNote, click File, and select Info. Click the View Sync Status button (or right-click the notebook and select Notebook Sync Status).
If available, click the Get Help button to access additional steps to troubleshoot the particular issue. If you don't see the button, you'll need to note the error or message and research online. Remember that you can always use the to find answers to software problems. It's critical that in this type of scenario you keep OneNote open and signed-in. Otherwise, you could lose your changes. Checking service status If you can't open the notebook using the web browser, it's possible that there is a problem with the OneDrive service. Using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge,.
In the case is up and running, you may need to. How to fix section not syncing on OneNote Usually, when sharing a notebook with other people, you may experience that sections will sync except for one in particular. In this case, you can try two things: You can manually try to sync the section in question, or you can copy the pages to a new section and then delete the one causing the problem. Syncing section manually When a section isn't synchronizing automatically, OneNote includes an easy way to sync a particular section manually. On OneNote, click on File, and select Info. Click the View Sync Status button (or right-click the notebook and select Notebook Sync Status).
Under 'Shared Notebook Synchronization,' click the Sync now button for the section with the problem. Copying pages to a new section If the OneNote section refuses to sync, you can try copying the pages to a new section, and then delete the old section with the problem. On OneNote, click the Create a New Section button from the navigation bar.
Use a descriptive name for the new section. In the section with the sync problem, right-click each page, and select the Move or Copy option. Select the newly created section as the destination, and click Copy. After completing the steps, you can use the steps mentioned earlier to sync the section manually, and if everything works correctly, you can safely right-click and select Delete in the old section. Emptying OneNote Recycle Bin Sometimes, removing a section that isn't working, or you no longer need, may also cause syncing problems, which is why it's also important to remove deleted sections from the recycle bin. On OneNote, click the History tab.
Click the Notebook Recycle Bin button. Right-click the section and select Delete. If the section contains pages that you want to keep, make sure to refer to the above instructions to copy pages to a new section, and then empty the content from the recycle bin. How to fix misplaced sections on OneNote When sharing a notebook with other users and OneNote tries to sync changes of a section, but it's unable to find the section file, it'll appear as misplaced with an icon in the Notebooks list. If you come across this issue, you can move the section to another notebook or you can simply delete the section in question. Moving misplaced section to another notebook In the case you see a misplaced section, OneNote allows you to manually address the issue by moving a particular section of a notebook. On OneNote, right-click the tab for the misplaced section, and click Move or Copy.
Under 'Move or Copy Section,' click the target notebook from the list. Click the Move button, or Copy button, depending on the action you want to take. Deleting misplaced section from notebook If you don't need the section, instead of moving it, you can simply remove the misplaced section. On OneNote, under your Notebooks list, click the Misplaced Sections. Right-click the name of the section, and select Delete. How to fix content sync conflict on OneNote While collaborating in real-time with another person trying to edit the same piece of text can cause synchronization conflicts. When OneNote detects a conflict, it'll create copies of the same page, and you'll see a yellow message indicating the problem.
If you're having sync conflicts, you'll need to copy the content to the main page, and then delete the page. On OneNote, at the top of the page, click the yellow message. Copy the content from the temporary page that shows the error, and then paste the content in the primary page. Right-click the page causing the error, and click Delete to remove it. In the future, you can minimize the chances of merge conflicts by having only one person working on one page at a time, or coordinate with other users the section of the page you'll be editing. How to fix storage sync errors on OneNote In the rare case that you see an error code, such as 0xE00015E0, it means that either your device doesn't have enough space or the notebook is too big to sync. Although the problem can just happen because you have a ton of stuff stored in the notebook, typically, storage related errors with OneNote happen because of a large number of backup files.
You can quickly address the problem by adjusting the backup settings on OneNote. Optimizing files One way to prevent syncing issues is to optimize the space used by notebooks. On OneNote, click on File, and select Options. Click on Save & Backup. Under 'Optimizing files,' click the Optimize All Files Now button. Reducing automatic backups In addition to optimizing files, you can also set the number of OneNote automatic backups to a lower number to save space to prevent future syncing problems.
On OneNote, click on File, and select Options. Click on Save & Backup. Under 'Backup,' make sure to reduce the number for the Number of backup copies to keep. Removing unnecessary backups You can also save storage space by deleting some of the existing backup files and get OneNote syncing again. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
Type the following path and click OK.%localappdata% Microsoft OneNote. Double-click the folder that corresponds to the version number you have installed, for example, 16.0 for OneNote 2016. Double-click the Backup folder. Delete the backup files you no longer need. After completing the steps, OneNote should start syncing those large notebooks without problems. Wrapping things up While this guide covers some of the ways to resolve syncing problems using OneNote, remember that sometimes it could be an issue with the program itself.
This is why it's always important to install updates as they may include fixes and improvements to get syncing working again. You can quickly check for updates on desktop version of OneNote on File Account Office Options, and clicking the Update Now button. Also, it might be obvious, but before trying to troubleshoot OneNote, you should first check your internet connection. You'll be surprised the times a bad connection can be the root of problems on your computer. Hey bubbabanger, I'm the Product Manager on OneNote responsible for sync. We're aware that some users are experiencing this issue, and are working towards a solution. It'd help us a lot if you could give us a little more information. Have you, or anyone who had access to the notebook, renamed a section/page recently?.
How did you know the notes had disappeared from your device? What did you see (or what didn't you see) and do you have a screenshot? It seems like you still saw the notebook in OneNote's notebook list?. What OneNote clients did you have to close/re-open the notebook?
Win32, OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote on Android, etc.? Thanks so much, the OneNote team really appreciates the support and feedback we get from users like you. I'll keep this thread updated as we get to the bottom of this issue! Grant. Hey Grant, Thank you for reaching out. I'll do my best to answer these for you:.
As far as I know, most cases did not involve any name changes to sections or pages. I can't say that is the case for all of them, but must people called me this morning and said they simply opened OneNote, were about to look at something on a page or add content, and all of a sudden everything (tabs, pages, content) just disappeared. Kind of answered this above, but they were in a notebook and there was just nothing there, even though a second ago everything was fine.
It just gave an error that said 'There are no sections open in this notebook or section group. Click here to create a new section'. The notebook still showed over in the Notebook list, but there were no tabs or pages for that notebook. Once I logged into OneDrive and looked at the notebook online, I could see everything was still there. I tried just manually syncing the notebook and that didn't work. The only thing that worked was to physically close the notebook in the OneNote client, then in OneDrive, right click the notebook and select 'Open in OneNote'. Then it re-downloaded the notebook and seemed to work.
The weird thing is that is not consistent. We had a user that made a notebook and shared it with others. The person that made the notebook could not see anything in the client, but others could. Vice versa, we had someone that made a notebook and shared it, and everyone could see it no issue except one or two people.
Here's a screenshot of the error:. We have multiple versions and clients. All are 32 bit versions of Office.
We have Office 2010 Standard, Office 2010 Pro Plus, Office 2013 Standard and Office 2016. It happened on every version except for 2016 (although we only have 2 users on 2016). Also on several OS (Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro, and Windows 10 Pro). Hi Grant, I also had this problem start today (August 17, 2016). I was editing my notebook in OneNote 2013 (32 bit on Windows 10 with the recent anniversary update). One minute everything was find then suddenly everything in the notebook just vanished similar to.
The notebook still appeared in OneNote desktop, however all tabs/pages were simply gone. Syncing the notebook did nothing. The notebook was still accessible on a Surface 3 tablet (windows 10, OneNote 2013 32 bit) as well as in my browser at onedrive.live.com and changes synced between those two platforms but not my desktop computer. I closed the notebook and re-added it from.
This successfully downloaded the notebook to my desktop, but no further syncing between the two platforms worked (edits made on the tablet/browser would not download to the desktop and edits on the desktop would not sync). Other things I tried, all with the same result (it would red-download the notebook, but syncing only with my desktop remains broken):. Restarting computer. Signing out of account and back in (both within OneNote and Windows 10).
Uninstalling OneNote 2013 and reinstalling. Uninstalling OneNote 2013 and trying OneNote 2016. Deleting all local cache and settings. In answer to your questions:.
No. No page or section had been renamed in greater than 12 hours.
Multiple syncs between the cloud and my desktop and tablet had successfully taken place as recently as minutes before the pages vanished. The notebook was still there and listed, however all the tabs and pages were gone. It gave the exact error screenshoted by. Same issue just happened to me. I opened OneNote 2010 on my work pc running windows 7, and my personal (web) notebook came up. I copied some text out of one of my notes to paste into a browser, and when I went back to ON the notebook was completely empty. The shared family notebook I have is also completely empty and no longer shows as being shared.
In OneNote2010 it shows the all the empty notebooks as being saved at alphanumeric string) /^.Documents I went to onenote.com and the same thing, personal and sahred family notebooks gone. This all worked fine yesterday. I see a gray screen that says 'There are no sections open in this notebook or section group. Click here to create a new section' currently, and when I close the notebook and reopen it it shows the same. I remoted in to my home pc running windows 10, that has OneNote version 17.7167.57861.0 and thankfully the notebooks are still there with all the info.

I have saved the most important notes as pdfs, but I have years of information saved. Two other people have had access. No they didn't delete the entire thing. They weren't even accessing it at the time.
The notebook still shows up on the left hand sidebar in Onenote 2016 (windows desktop), yet there are no sections, sections or section groups in there. This happened yesterday, and i managed to make a backup of C: users.USER. AppData Local Onenote on my laptop, but not my PC (both have the notebook synced to them).
However, it happened again today, and the backup is gone (because i renamed 16.0 - copy (ie the backup of the good one) to 16.0 (in. Local Onenote), and then when i reopened Onenote everything was there). And here's the kicker. I have a test today, and I need those notes.
I understand that bugs happen, but this is ridiculous. And it's not just onenote. My Surface Book, Wunderlist, windows, each have had their share of breaking bugs (surface detach problem, sleep problem, disappearing notes in wunderlist, windows hanging after anniversary update. These issues are resolved now, but they were going for a long time. Onenote 2016 windows desktop, a PC and a SB (btw, also had had a bunch of issues) Still, thank you for trying to help us, i'll keep watching this thread. Something to note: On my PC, i right clicked the notebook and selected 'sync this notebook now' and about five seconds after that everything in the notebook disappeared. Perhaps this is helpful?
However, i did the same on my laptop and it didn't happen for a few minutes. By the way, i have other notebooks that are also shared with the same people and those were fine. The only major differences are that i use this notebook frequently, and that this notebook is much larger (about 6 gigs, i think). Also, please excuse my choice of words in my original post. Thinking you've lost all of your notes this close to exams will do that to you. Hi Grant, Just thought I would chime in and say that I'm experiencing this issue as well, and started on 8/17. Like the others, the notebooks in OneNote simply vanished, with the app saying 'There are no sections open in this notebook or section group'.
I've rebooted the laptop, closed and opened the notebook, re-sync'd it, all to no avail. Even weirder, if I try to go to OneNote.com from within my work domain (I connect to it via VPN), I can get to the OneNote page, and I can see the documents that are in my account, but if I actually try and click on one of them it says that the page cannot be displayed (like a 404 error and says the connection has been reset).
This happens with every document I click on. If I get the link to the notebook from the OneNote app and paste it into the browser, same thing, page cannot be displayed. And weirder STILL.If I go outside my work domain / VPN, I can access OneNote.com just fine and pull up my documents without issue (I dont' have the app installed on my personal PC, but able to get to onenote.com via browser). Everything is there and while it's a few months old, is still intact (Thank God) Now, I know what you're saying, and I would agree with you normally, that this sounds like a Firewall or some other network issue, but the fact that it was working yesterday, and all of these other people are experiencing the same thing makes me think otherwise. It's still currently not working, so if there is anything you think I should try, please.I'm all ears. Feel free to PM if you wish, or reply here. I've tried opening a ticket with your help desk and I noped out of the conversation when they told me that we needed to re-install Office 2010, and wondered if I wanted to buy an upgrade to 2016:( ).

Yes this is indeed strange. Let's try to figure out if it's just a coincidence or not. Can you access OneNote.com via your work VPN today? Also can you try accessing OneDrive.com and documents inside there via your VPN? Today I tried:.
Inside OneNote App: Closing and re-opening notebook. I can see the list of notebooks I have online at onedrive.live.com. If I select it to open it, it spins for a second and then gives the 'There are no sections open in this notebook or section group'. From OneNote.com inside VPN: I'm able to sign in to the website.
I'm able to see a list of the notebooks under My Notebooks. If I click on any of them, it says: This site can’t be reached The connection was reset.
Try: Checking the connection Checking the proxy and the firewall ERRCONNECTIONRESET If I go to the OneNote app and copy the link to the Notebook into the browser to go directly to the notebook, I get the same error as above 'Site can't be reached' All of this works outside of the VPN. Maybe I just got unlucky as hell and my company made a change to firewall / VPN or something, so I've opened a ticket, haven't heard anything yet, but the L1 guy didn't know anything about it. If you'd like me to try anything else, lemme know.
